Normally we receive Evaluation Forms after a performance, but occasionally we receive a letter of thanks.

The following is from Stephen S. Cure, Director of Educational Services for the Texas State Historical Association, referring to a performance by Bob Heinonen on June 6, 2006:

June 21, 2006

Dear Bob:

Thank you for helping to make Connecting Texas: Los Cominos Reales such a successful program. The Texas State Historical Association takes great pride in providing quality adult learning opportunities through the Heritage Travel Program. This year's participants greatly enjoyed learning from your Stephen F. Austin presentation at Washington-on-the-Brazos. In the program evaluation, many people cited your presentation as a personal highlight that added to their understanding of the history of Los Caminos Reales.

We appreciate you giving so generously of your time and talents.

Jack held the audience attention during his entire presentation (all eyes were on him.) Everyone asked was very impressed with his demeanor and knowledge of the subject matter! Excellent!!

How do you feel about our service to you? Outstanding service from initial contact through the entire process.

This is from Mr. Chuck Frankenfield with the Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Mansfield

Those who are truly interested absolutely love it and that is why we offer a diversity in programming. I have only heard wonderful reviews and comments about your performance. This is a wonderful service to people who have low vision and can not read as well, but have a love of history. Especially factual history from the point of view of the participant.

How do you feel about our service to you? I always appreaciate your professionalism. Everything is mailed on time and you are always on time. It would be great if you would email your invoice, w-9 and publicity media also.

Helen Garrison told the story of Cynthia Ann Parker in good English in a voice easy to understand.

How do you feel about our service to you? Very good.

This is from a resident at Atria Collier Park in Beaumont
about Helen Garrison's performance of Cynthia Ann Parker on August 14, 2009.

Ms. Garrison had us mesmerized - I was so thoroughly absorbed in the oral presentation that I actually believed in it and was a witness to her kidnapping and her life! What many of us knew of the Indians comes from old-time movies - biased against them by what we saw - scalping, murder, ....I am grateful for the insight her performance gave us. The audience was bound - personally, my only objection lay in the fact that the "show" ended!!!

This is from a resident at Carriage Inn in Bryan
about Helen Garrison's performance of Cynthia Ann Parker on August 12, 2009.

Thoughts expressed by residents:
Accurate facts were followed by questions which were answered well.
Especially interesting was the description of his attire, wig included.
Timing was good.
Good explanations.
Presentation itself was good (no hesitations)
Please come back with the Constitution and Bill of Rights
As a part of the Henry family, I have had letters of value to a Texas historian; I am trying to locate them, having passed them on, so I can make copies for Mr. Heinonen.
If he will only drop the "on", our names will be the same.

All were unanimous in their praise!

I personally think that now, perhaps more than ever before, we need to hear more about our history and government. Keep going!!!

How do you feel about our service to you? It's great and we are most appreciative.

This is from Ms. Norma Lowder who is a resident at University Place in Houston

This is from Ms. Jessica Stradley who is the Activities Director at Three Fountains in Dallas

I was able to see his performance for the first time. I thought it was wonderful. He played the role of Patrick Henry very well. Then afterwards he told us about Patrick Henry and about his life. Very interesting performance.

How do you feel about our service to you? I'm glad I was a part of this. I believe it is great that someone with talent is able to come and practice for us. We are honored and we welcome him anytime.

This is from Ms. Sharon Flutt who is the Activities Director at Heritage Place in Fredericksburg
about Bob Heinonen's dress rehearsal of Patrick Henry: Why America on June 16, 2009.

Mr. Heinonen actually becomes the character. His historical accuracy is right on target. You never think of him as an actor - he becomes the character - the mark of a great stage person. Audience was completely drawn into the narrative. From his first word, you do not think Bob Heinonen, as he is Charles Goodnight.

This is from Mr. Wayne Sebesta who is a resident at Atria Collier Park in Beaumont
about Bob Heinonen's presentation of Charles Goodnight on April 16, 2009.

Helen Garrison acted out Cynthia Ann Parker with costume, simplicity, and eloquence. It was difficult to separate the actress from the character she was portraying. Her skill in delivery was measured, even, and completely spellbinding. There was little doubt that Cynthia Ann was speaking.

The history of this remarkable woman came across seemingly effortlessly. Our audience was mesmerized. Not a shuffle of chairs, or harrumpgh could be heard. But, you could have heard a pin drop. In my lifetime (76) I have witnessed many professional theatricals in many places. Never in my life have I witnessed such vivid and absolute authenticity, well maybe Ethel Merman in "Annie Get Your Gun".

We were very grateful for her talent, thought, and time. We commend her dedication to this characterization and depth of research, which kept her so intimately true to the life she portrayed.

We cannot recommend her highly enough. Words do not do justice. You have to be a witness to this magic.

This is from Ms. Rebecca D. Snell who is Co-coordinator for St. Helena's Episcopal Church Senior Fellowship in Boerne

This has been the second presentation by Mr. Heinonen that I have attended (and thoroughly enjoyed). His ability to reflect mannerisms seem appropriate to the time periods - and locations - that his character occupied. I believe that all of us in our "mature" community can relate to the emotions he brings out and hope that younger audiences reap the same rewards. This is from resident Mr. RHH

Jack Edmondson exceeded our expectations. He was such a personable visitor to our group and his performance was outstanding. The church's microphone was "squawking" at the beginning of his presentation and was turned off. He did not need the microphone as his booming strong voice carried through the large room. Jack was completely unflappable through it all.

How do you feel about our service to you? We can suggest no improvements. It couldn't have been better.

It is with a great deal of gratitude to our Activity Director for inviting me to respond to your request for an assessment critique of your most recent visit. This was my first time attending one of the Texas Heroes programs.

I found your storytelling abilities and stage presence were realistic and transforming. Your storytelling was so clear and believable, the stage props were amazing that my mind was transported from the Terrace at Clear Lake to the campfire chat, by the swollen river's bank, on a cool December day in the 1800's.

My wife had gone to an earlier years presentation and found the storytelling to be great and that she recommended that I attend this opportunity. At first I told her I would think about it.

When the Activity Director posted your coming back again she suggested we could both go. However, the day you were scheduled found that the time and date conflicted with her scheduled medical appointment. Ergo, I was curious enough to sign up and went to "check" it out. I am glad that I did as the program and set was great. The speaker held my attention through out. My wife was correct in her assessment and now we are both hoping to see the next program you offer.

I am not a native Texan (having been from Louisiana). I learned more about this phase of Texas history than I ever knew before. Mr. Heinonen's presentation was very intense and very interesting. History was never one of my favorite subjects, but I wish he could have been my teacher. He missed his calling if he was not a history professor. I hope to have the opportunity to hear him again soon. History would never be a dull subject again.

This is from a resident at Atria Collier Park Retirement Community in Beaumont
about Bob Heinonen's portrayal of Robert S. Neighbors on February 9, 2006.

This presentation was a real surprise. In the past, characters [not from Texas Heroes] telling their tales have been enjoyable, but Mr. Heinonen became Charles Goodnight, and never slipped out of character. It was very entertaining; his descriptive style made it real for all of us. Now, we want to meet the other Heroes!

How do you feel about our service to you? Very professional; all questions answered and all calls returned promptly.

    Granny G

I wanted to tell you how much our residents enjoyed "Granny G" yesterday! She was wonderful and captivated our residents with her storytelling. I took some photos and will email those to you and her this week. Her stories were wonderful reminders of similar childhoods of our residents who are in their 80's and 90's. She reminded all of us that we need to share our stories and lives so they can be passed on to future generations.

We "kicked off" National Assisted Living Week yesterday and will be celebrating through Saturday, September 17th. Granny G was a great way to start off our exciting week of events and we THANK YOU and Granny G.

I am enclosing a check for $175.00 for her presentation. We look forward to seeing you and your fellow historians in the future!

How do you feel about our service to you? Excellent - very responsive to our request & professional from beginning to end.

This is from Ms. Judy Grayson who is the Community Relations Director at Hearthstone Assisted Living at Cottonwood in Temple about Helen Garrison's performance as Granny G on September 11, 2005.

This well-prepared & presented story of Texas Heroes should be available to all students of our state's history.

This is from Ms. Norma Lowder who is a resident of University Place in Houston about Jack Edmondson's performance as Sam Houston on August 12, 2005. Ms. Lowder is a retired Principal of the High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, Houston.

Found Mr. Edmondson an erudite scholar of history. I've seen only one performance of this series of programs but am anticipating all future ones. Mr. Edmondson made Jim Bowie come alive for me and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. It seemed that the audience especially repsonded to Mr. Edmondson's witty asides and I felt his passion for his subject.

How do you feel about our service to you? I, like most other residents of Collier Park, thirst for knowledge and entertainment and these appearances provide that and more.

This is from resident N. C. who lives at Collier Place Retirement Community in Beaumont about Jack Edmondson's performance as James Bowie on August 11, 2005.

I think this was an amazing performance and idea. So many people know bits & pieces about Texas history but this just really made it all come together. I want to have another performance.

How do you feel about our service to you? The service was great. Giving out pre-made flyers is a wonderful touch. It lets us advertise properly & takes some of the work off us. Also the phone call the week before is just great customer service. Sometimes when you set up events so far in advance you wonder if the performer remembered your engagement.

This is from Ms. Susan Clayton who is the Activities Director at Belmont Village at West University in Houston about Bob Heinonen's performance as William Barret Travis on July 12, 2005.

We were very much impressed with Mr. Bob Heinonen's performance. He was on time and never faulted in his presentation of George Durham. The dress was neat and told of that time and "job" he held. Mr. Heinonen was very friendly and had time to stay and answer all the questions. I would like to hear him again and learn more about Texas History. (I am from Alabama)

How do you feel about our service to you? Everything you said you would do was done. No trouble at all. Thank you for that.

He is dependable, knowledgeable, and professional in every sense of the word. His commanding presence as William Barret Travis captivates the audience from the moment he steps onto the stage. I highly recommend Bob Heinonen and his Texas Heroes to any group who wants to bring Texas history to life.

How do you feel about our service to you? You've always been very responsive to our requests for you to come do a presentation and we've been very pleased with your service.

This is from Ms. Danelle Warnke who is the Activities Director at Remington Park at Baytown in Baytown about Bob Heinonen's performance as Charles Goodnight on January 13, 2005.

We were all very excited about the prospect of meeting "Cynthia Anne Parker" and we were not disappointed! Watching and listening to Ms. Garrison was as close to Cynthia Anne as one could get. We felt as tho she was telling her own story. The emotion was so real. The Q & A afterwards was also very interesting and informative. Lots of "extra" info.

How do you feel about our service to you? I have worked with many performers and have never felt as good about an activity as with "Texas Heroes". Performers are on time, and prior attention to detail is great! We hope to see and get to know many more of the "Texas Heroes."

The audience of approximately 600 people were totally captured by the performance. Not a sound was heard as all were engrossed. Even the busboys stopped clearing dishes and watched.

How do you feel about our service to you? Everything was handled in a thoroughly professional manner. Communication on arrangements was excellent.

This is from Mr. Bob Noble of Northrop-Grumman Corporation who was the Program Chair for IEEE Autotestcon 2004 in San Antonio about the performance by Bob Heinonen as William Barret Travis on September 22, 2004.

Some folks were skeptical of just how entertaining this program might be. What a delightful surprise they had! Mr. Heinonen was simply fabulous - it was as though Colonel Travis was right in front of us! The Q&A section was very informative - even our most studied "historian" learned something new.

How do you feel about our service to you? The contacts prior to the performance were very helpful. Nice to know that everything was still "ago"!

This is from Ms. Leslie Gillispie who is the Activities Director of Parkwood Retirement Community in Bedford about the performance by Bob Heinonen as William Barret Travis on September 23, 2004.

Bob Heinonen was outstanding as "Charles Goodnight" -- we are still receiving rave reviews. One person in the audience said she has never been on a horse in her life, but felt as she was actually on the trail drive during the storytelling. Another person, who is normally bored with theater performances, is still talking about how much he enjoyed the evening with "Charles Goodnight." We are already making plans for our next Texas hero.

How do you feel about our service to you? There is only one word to describe the service you gave us -- EXCELLENT!

Charles Goodnight was great. One of the best we have had. All residents enjoyed the performance, especially our men. Much of the information is new to us and different, more detailed than your Texas History text. I particularly enjoy how Bob talks to the audience and makes a connection with them as the character before he starts the program. He has their full attention.

How do you feel about our service to you? Always provides promotional sheet before performance. Bob always comes early and is ready to perform. The costumes are great!

"We wanted to show our support for all the hard work you do so we attended this event."
"We became so captivated by the performance and learned so much."
"It was very interesting and such a wonderful way for all ages to learn about history," said one resident.

As Activity Director of a senior retirement community in Deer Park, I felt it was important to schedule this performance during the month of September which is remembrance month. Life forever changed on September 8, as did for thousands of people who survived the 1900 hurricane.

When I scheduled Texas Heroes visit, little did I know that hurricane Isabel would have just crossed my beloved state of Virginia. Fortunately my family made it through Isabel. She is to be the worst storm since 1933. Now I need to research the 1933 storm that hit Virginia. Maybe I can find someone to tell me about it on my next visit home.

Will folks still want to know about Isabel 100 years from now? I think so.

Thanks to Texas Heroes, we continue to give respect and remembrance.

This is from Ms. Nellie Palmer who is the Activities Director at Hearthstone at the Mainland in Texas City about the performance by LaJuanna Faught as Deline Rose on January 14, 2003.

Helen came in plenty of time before the performance, was dressed in an interesting way to portray the part, was excellent in relaying the story -- I even had a couple of tears it seemed so real. She portrayed Cynthia so much like it might have been, with feelings as a woman would feel, but with such strength that must have been required in the real Cynthia's life.

How do you feel about our service to you?  Excellent!! Thank you for all that you do to help us have MUCH success with your events.

This is from Ms. Linda Edwards who is the Events Director at Arkansas House in Arlington about the performance by Helen Garrison as Cynthia Ann Parker on November 15, 2002.

The performance was excellent. Our residents were spell-bound. You could hear a pin drop. With the strength of Goodnight's character, one of our residents was in total shock when "Goodnight" completed, took off his beard, and she realized he was not the "real" Goodnight. We all learned so much more about ranching life and felt we truly experienced what Goodnight must have gone through. What to some might not have been interesting was extremely interesting presented in the manner we were able to see.

How do you feel about our service to you?  Excellent
