Sam Houston grew up in rural Tennessee and really didn't like any of the opportunities presented to him. In fact, for a few years he "dropped out" and lived with the Cherokee Indians. But some how, he became prominent.
Sam became the Governor of Tennessee at age of 34 and married 20 year old Elisa Allen. And that is where the saga begins. Sam and Elisa Allen separated after 3 months of marriage; soon after the separation, Sam resigned as Governor of Tennessee and went to live with his Cherokee tribe in Arkansas.
But Sam was not down and out...a few years later he ended up in Texas and became the Commander of the Texas Army. As Commander, he defeated Mexican President Santa Anna at San Jacinto and handed Texas its independence. He went on to be President of the Republic of Texas, the first Senator from the State of Texas and, finally, the Governor of the State of Texas. Tell a teacher that Sam Houston can come to their school.
