Patrick Henry was born in Virginia in 1736 into the middle rank of Virginian gentry.

After failing at a couple of businesses, Henry became a lawyer in 1760. In 1765, he was elected to the Virgina House of Burgesses where he was considered radical...almost a revolutionary. He challenged British authority and was accused of uttering words treasonable to the British Crown.

On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry gave his most famous speech; it was to the House of Burgesses urging the legislature to take military action against the approaching British military force. He ended his speech with, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
